What Is POAS and Why It Beats ROAS for Scaling Profit
POAS (Profit on Ad Spend) is gross profit divided by ad spend. It is the metric that tells you whether advertising made you money — unlike ROAS, which only tells you it made you revenue. For any business with variable margins, POAS is the number that should run your buying.
POAS vs ROAS, defined
- ROAS = revenue ÷ ad spend. A 5x ROAS sounds great and can still lose money.
- POAS = gross profit ÷ ad spend. Optimizes to the money you actually keep.
A worked example
| Product | Revenue | Margin | Gross profit | Ad spend | ROAS | POAS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A (low margin) | $10,000 | 20% | $2,000 | $2,000 | 5.0x | 1.0x |
| B (high margin) | $6,000 | 60% | $3,600 | $2,000 | 3.0x | 1.8x |
ROAS says scale Product A. POAS says scale Product B — and POAS is right. Product A barely breaks even after spend; Product B prints profit. Bidding to ROAS actively steers budget toward your worst customers.
How to operationalize POAS
- Get margin per product into a feed or value-rules table.
- Feed profit as conversion value via value-based bidding and offline conversion import.
- Layer in server-side tracking so the signal you optimize on is clean.
- Watch MER (Marketing Efficiency Ratio) alongside POAS for the blended truth.
FAQ
What is a good POAS?
Break-even POAS is 1.0x (you keep nothing after spend). Healthy DTC targets sit at 1.5x–3x depending on margin and lifetime value. The right target is the one that funds your other fixed costs and a profit.
Can Google and Meta optimize to POAS directly?
Not natively — they optimize to whatever value you send. The trick is sending profit as the conversion value rather than revenue, which makes their algorithms chase profit on your behalf.
We build POAS systems into every e-commerce PPC account. See the deeper operating model in DTC scaling on profit, not ROAS.
